3ngine Product Bulletin 06/09/2011 - New SEO Features

If you want your site to be found on Google, you care about this.

Over the last few months, our renowned Tech Think Tank (Brad) has developed and released 2 major new features in 3ngine, our website Content Management System (CMS).  They significantly improve the Search Engine Optimization opportunities available to you.

To see a site done right, check out John Fuhler's All Safe Storage site at allsafeinfo.net. For example, try a Google search on "self storage mchenry il" - you'll find that the only actual business site returned on the first page is All Safe - the rest are those pesky aggregator returns that most people ignore. Other similar searches produce consistently good results - on a simple, well expressed site using no silly tricks or "SEO Secret" gimmicks.

Note: The topic of SEO immediately becomes pretty technical. Some of you DIY mavens jump right into this stuff, but some are less enthusiastic. If you want to make your site more Google-friendly but don't want to do it yourself, remember that we offer a very flexible SEO service package. Just call us at 815.455.3383, and we'll tell you all about it. And of course, coaching over the phone is always free: 815.455.3383.

1. Title Tags.

Recent reports indicate that it's now more important than ever to include page keywords in the < title > tag. As many of you know, we automatically populate the title tag for each page with the page name you specify in the editor. To better accommodate the inclusion of keywords, we expanded page name to hold 75 characters, the maximum that the search engines pay attention to. To take proper advantage, we recommend that you go through all your pages adding keywords to the page name, most important first.

To see the results of your work in the actual SEO tags for a page, in the browser menu click view >> source - that'll show you the actual source code for the page. Then hit CTL-F to get a find box, and type in "title". It will position you the code you want to see.

2. Online Store Item Keywords.

This is huge for those of you who have an online store on your site, whether you use the shopping cart or not.

As of now, 3ngine automatically populates the SEO-sensitive tags on each product detail page as follows:
To optimize findability (yes, that's a word!) for your products, go through your inventory and make changes where you need to:

That's it for now. We'll be announcing additional enhancements soon.

Meanwhile, if you have any questions, or would like to have us tune your site for you, give us a ring at 815.455.3383.

Have a great summer!

Ken and Brad
