On Sunday, July 11th, the McHenry County Historical Society Museum in Union will play host to its 24th annual Heritage Fair. Cake walks, a pie baking contest, quilt bed turnings and five area magicians performing during the afternoon inside the museum are just a few of the activities available for the public to enjoy. One continuing Heritage Fair crowd pleaser is the afternoon Antique Auction held outside on the museum grounds. It begins at 1:00 p.m. with Wonder Lake auctioneer Russ Davis. In connection with that auction, the Historical Society is looking for donations of pre-1950 good quality antique furniture and furnishings, quilts and coverlets, radios and primitives. Items donated for the auction can be tax deductible. Funds raised by this annual event are used to operate an award-winning county-wide historical museum, provide student and adult educational programs and encourage county-wide efforts at historic preservation. To donate antiques and collectibles, please contact the Society at 815-923-2267 or info@mchsonline.org. Pickup service is available. The Society’s web site contains Heritage Fair times and events. The event is free to the public. Doggy Dine Out Wags Tails at Port Edward Sometimes a grateful dog like to take their best friend out for a walk and, perhaps, even a nice meal out. The World comes to our Community in 60 Days For the 18th consecutive July, The McHenry County Youth Sports Association (MCYSA) will be hosting its summer international baseball tournament. Also, as of 2008, MCYSA changed its national affiliation and is now part of USSSA. In 2010, plans are being made to welcome between 108 to 114 teams to the Crystal Lake area. The roster of teams include: twenty international teams from Japan, Puerto Rico, New Zealand, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Aruba, Russia and Venezuela. United States teams will be coming from Alameda, California to Cape Cod, Massachusetts – from St. Paul Minnesota to Garland, Texas – in other words from coast-to-coast and border-to-border. The Holiday Inn (tournament headquarters), Country Inn and Suites, and Super 8 are preparing to roll out their red carpets to provide the best possible experience for their guests. Local businesses are offering discounted prices to visitors while also helping offset tournament expenses with generous sponsorships. Buffalo Wild Wings has invited international players that are home stayed, along with their host families, to a complementary lunch during the tournament. Sage Products, Inc., the City of Crystal Lake and the Crystal Lake Park District all should be commended and recognized for the crucial role that they play in helping this event become a reality every year. Local UW Behind on Goal United Way of Greater McHenry County is expecting the overall contributions to their 2009-10 annual campaign to fall short of the $1,825,000 goal. Due to the decrease of contributions, funding will be cut by at least 9% from their partner agencies. United Way currently funds 27 agencies that provide 52 human service programs to those in need throughout the community providing programs ranging from senior nutrition to child care to emergency food and shelter.
