Pages
It's all about the content, and here, in the Page editor, is where you'll be doing most of it.
Quick note - if you want to use an Image, a File, or a Video in your page, you need to upload it first. Under the Content menu, you will find a separate area (gallery) to upload and maintain each type of file.
Click on Add new page to begin working on a new page, or on an existing page in the page list.
You may create a new page without creating a menu link for it first. In fact, you don't need and will possibly not link to every page in your site with a menu item - you can link pages to each other (or even make a page out of other pages). For instance, your menu might link to just the first page in a series that relate to each other and you will link from one page to the next inside of the pages. You might even want to keep different copies of a page for different seasons or times of the year and link to the appropriate version when you want to. It's completely up to you...
The list of pages conveys a wealth of information about your pages that will help you organize and maintain your site content (pages).
In the header row of the list, notice that you can click on the column titles for Name, Type, Status, & Update Date and By. Clicking on these column titles will re-sort the page list
The Link icon at the beginning of each page line is the real world link for your page. This is for your convenience and allows you to quickly grab a link for your page(s) that you can share. This real world link is the properly formatted & contextually correct link for the page and saves you from having to launch your site & dig your way to a page to get at its' link. You will also see this link icon in listings of dynamic content/functions such as Galleries and Blog threads. Note - If you are using Internet Explorer, clicking on it will paste the address to the Clipboard for you. If you are using Firefox, you will need to RightClick on it and Copy the link manually.
Next on the page list line you will see several icons that indicate the Type and Status of your page. Mouse over each of them (here or in the page listing) to see pop up text that explains their meanings.
Click on View to launch and view a page. Click on Edit to work on the page.
You can make a page available or unavailable in your site by clicking on Make Live / Make Dormant. Depending on your General site settings, pages that have been created or changed by Editors may need approval. Use the View link to check out the page and then simply click on Make Live to activate it. Webmasters have the additional option to Lock a critical page so that it cannot accidentally be changed.
Next on the page list line is the change date and the name of the last user to work on the page.
And lastly, is a mapping of where the page is linked from in your site. You can View and Edit these cross references quickly from here. If a page is not in use (not linked to from a menu item or another page) you will instead see the option to delete the page. You may only delete pages that are not in use. To delete a page, first release any links to it. This requirement helps protect you from accidently deleting valid pages.
Shadow pages, denoted in gray, are created automatically as you work with pages. A snapshot (copy) of a page will be created upon your first change of the day and be kept for a number of days you set, after which it will be automatically deleted. Use these to assist in editing, giving you the ability to backtrack or just track changes.
